Choosing a size and a paper

Every work here can be ordered at four sizes and on three papers. The choice is simpler than it looks.

The four sizes

• S — 297 × 420 mm, from ¥27,000
• M — 364 × 515 mm, ¥30,000
• L — 420 × 594 mm, ¥44,000
• XL — 18 × 24 in (457 × 610 mm), ¥58,000

Each sheet has fixed side margins — 20, 25, 30 and 35 mm respectively — and the image is always centred between them. Top and bottom are balanced for each picture, with a deeper space below for the signature and edition number.

What a larger sheet gives you

This is worth saying plainly, because it is not what most people expect. A photograph can only be printed as large as its master file allows at full quality, and the studio never enlarges a picture beyond that, nor crops it to fill a sheet.

So at S, most works are scaled down slightly to fit the narrower sheet. At M, L and XL, most works are printed at their full native size — roughly 31 × 40 cm — and the larger sheets give that image more paper around it: a wider, quieter margin. That is how many photographers prefer a print to be seen, and it is what makes an L or XL feel substantial on a wall.

Which size for which wall

As a rough guide: S suits a desk, a shelf, or a narrow wall between doors. M is the most versatile and continues the artist's own original editions. L holds its own over a sofa or a sideboard. XL is for a wall you want to give entirely to one picture — and it is a standard frame size in most countries.

The three papers

• Canson Edition Etching Rag — 310 gsm, matte, medium-rough, white. The classic etching surface.
• Hahnemühle German Etching — 310 gsm, matte, medium-rough, white. A little rougher and warmer; the image sits slightly deeper.
• Takeo Kakita — 300 gsm, smooth, warm white. A Japanese paper with a quieter surface.

All three are cotton, acid-free and pigment-printed; the choice is about feeling, not longevity. If you cannot decide, German Etching suits the colour botanicals and Kakita the monochromes. Signed or unsigned

Both come with a numbered certificate of authenticity. A hand signature adds ¥4,000 and about a week. See how to read an edition number for what the signature and number record.
