Story
Five great leaves, so dark they are almost black, fill the whole picture, and where their stems meet at the centre a single small white flower has opened.
Everything here is heavy. The leaves are broad and waxy, their veins spread like the lines of a map, and there is hardly any room left for the pale wall behind them. It could have been a picture about darkness. But the eye does not stay in the dark. It goes straight to the flower — five white petals no larger than a fingertip — and rests there.
There are seasons when life feels like this: crowded, heavy, green going on black. We imagine we need a great deal of light to get through them. More often it is something small. A kind word, one good morning, a single person who does not leave. It is enough to know where the centre is.
