Story
Eight long leaves fan out from the top of a plain terracotta block, and at the centre, where they all meet, sits one small purple bud.
It is a crown, at first sight — a green one, spread wide, the kind a child would draw. But the bud in the middle is not wearing it. The bud is tiny, closed, easily overlooked; the leaves are what make it matter. Take them away and there would only be a small purple thing on a brick. Leave them, and the whole picture turns towards it.
We are rarely made important by what we are on our own. We are made important by who gathers around us: the people who make room, who spread themselves out so that something small at the centre can be seen. Most of us have been that bud at least once, and most of us have been a leaf.
