On top of a plain pale column, a green bud points straight up, and two long leaves fall away to either side.

It is a plant, and it is unmistakably a figure — a head, two arms, a body of fired clay. The leaves are not symmetrical; one reaches further than the other, the way arms do. The red running through them is the only warm colour in the frame.

Nothing has been added to make the resemblance. The arrangement was simply left alone until it became a person.
